Here in Canada we have the right to have a same sex partner and to marry who we choose. But sadly, legal rights do not ensure that our community is safe from hatred. In Canada, the flag representing Pride is flown proudly in cities across our country, and this year it is flying for the first time on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
But as a community, we are broken hearted. The vicious attack in Orlando has affected us in a deeply personal way. There are no words to describe the senseless, barbaric and cowardly act that has taken the lives of 49 innocent members of our community.
We must come together in unity at this time of profound sadness, and work towards a narrative of humanity and acceptance.
Our community has been sadly reminded that when it comes to discrimination, we still have much to do.
Together we stand.
